How much does website translation cost per word?
Providers quote website translation in three main ways: per word, per page and per hour. Centus (2025) lists $0.08 to $0.30 per word, $25 to $50 per page and $15 to $75 per hour.
The figures are not uniform across sources:
| Method or scope | Typical rate | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Machine translation + human post-editing (MTPE) | $0.03 to $0.12 per word | Transphere |
| Professional human translation | $0.10 to $0.30 per word | Transphere |
| Website localization | $0.20 to $0.50 per word | Circle Translations |
| Full localization (translation, engineering, testing) | from $0.17 per word, plus engineering and QA fees | Transphere |
Rates also depend on the language pair. Ibidem Group says Spanish, English, French, Italian, German or Catalan usually cost around €0.10 per word and that Russian, Chinese or Arabic cost more (the article shows no date, so check it before relying on it).
Website translation cost examples
- 20,000-word site, one language, human translator: roughly $2,000 to $3,200, at $0.10 to $0.16 per word (ConveyThis, 2026).
- 30-page business site (15,500 words), five languages: about $17,500 in total, or $3,500 per language (Transphere).
- Simple static sites: $1,500 to $5,000 per language (Circle Translations).
- Professional rates quoted by Weglot: $0.17 to $0.50 per word, at least $1,700 per 10,000 words (Weglot). This is a provider's own figure and sits at the high end of the other ranges.
In euros, La Fábrica de Net (2026) puts translation agencies at €0.08 to €0.15 per word, and Milega gives €0.10 to €0.20 per source word for agencies and €0.05 to €0.15 for freelancers.
Machine translation cost and what it leaves out
Machine translation is far cheaper per word, but it is only the cost of the engine. Google Cloud Translation charges $20 per million characters for NMT after the first 500,000 characters each month, which are free. That price does not include human review.
On the SEO side, Google recommends a separate URL for each language version rather than switching language with cookies or browser settings, and hreflang to tell search engines about the versions. Google also notes that hreflang can be declared in the HTML, HTTP headers or sitemaps, but using all three brings no benefit in Search, so one method is enough.
Lantis translates with AI (Gemini by default; Claude, DeepL or DeepSeek on request) and creates a URL per language, hreflang and sitemaps automatically. Its price is $3.50/month for 1 language, $3 per language per month for 2 to 9 languages and $2.50 per language per month for 10 or more.
